Custom-made pin badges or Made-to-order pin badges. It is another term to describe metal enamel badges with your own design. Often, it is referred to as a pin badge because a pin fastener is attached to the back of the metal badge. However the pin fastener has many different types.
Types of Pin Badges Available at Just Badges Melbourne
Military clutch pin or also known butterfly clutch pin, has two components i.e. the first component is a post with pointed tip, about half of a millimetre in thickness and about 10 millimetres high. The post is spot welded to the back of the metal badge. The second component is a round brass disc approximately 10mm in diameter with 2 small flaps that you can pinch with your index finger and your thumb to release its grip from the post.
Another pin type fastener is called Tie Tac or of deluxe clutch. It also uses a post, it is a better quality fastener, the post is taller at 12mm high. These Good quality clutches will not loosen its grips over time. It has a spring mechanism built inside the clutches. It is a small bulb-like structure at the top and a base with flange. To open or release the clutches from the post, one needs to pull the small bulb with one’s thumb and index finger.
Brooch pins or safety pins these are also some of the names that are used when people are searching for metal enamel pins or pin badges. This type of fastener has four components. One horizontal wire about 0.5mm thick and the length will vary according to the size of the metal badges. One end of the wire is bent to form a small loop and the other is sharp pointy to pin through a person’s attire. The second component is a long horizontal base which is flat with a width of about 2mm to 5mm depending on the length of the base. The longer the fastener is, the wider the base will be. The flat Base component has 2 other components attached to it. On one end of the base component (3rd component), it has a clam like parts to hold the small round loop of the wire so that the wire can rotate 180 degree forming a semicircle, on the other end of the base it has a fixed small dome with a slit cut, with an outer dome enclosing the small dome. The outer dome also has a slit cut that is the same size as the inner dome. The outer dome can rotate while encasing the inner dome. The inner dome and outer dome form as a closure for the horizontal wire. To open the fastener the outer dome needs to rotate till the slit of the inner dome and outer dome is aligned.
To close the fastener, the pointy sharp end of the horizontal wire is put in the slit, when both slits are aligned. The outer dome is then rotated; the slits no longer line up and so the pointy sharp end of the horizontal wire can no longer moved hence the fastener is closed.
Not so commonly used is a type of pin badge fastener called stick pins. This fastener has a long wire about 50mm long with a very pointy sharp point on one end and at the opposite end it is bent at 90 degree and has a length of a few millimetres. At this short bent end that the wire it is flanged. This flanged end is spot welded to the back of the metal badge.
